The Place Penetrations for Cable Trays command in BIMLOGIQ Copilot automates the insertion of penetration family instances wherever cable trays intersect with architectural or structural elements such as walls and floors. By removing the need for manual placement, this Revit AI tool saves time, reduces errors, and ensures precise openings for seamless coordination between trades.

Select Cable Trays

Manually choose cable trays in the active model that require penetrations, ensuring only relevant systems are included.

Include Cable Trays from Linked Models

Support for linked MEP models allows penetrations to be placed based on cable trays from external files, enhancing cross-discipline coordination.

Select Target Elements

Specify whether penetrations should be created in walls, floors, or both. The tool works seamlessly with both host and linked architectural models.

Choose the Penetration Family Type

Pick the family type to be placed for penetrations. Using company-standard families ensures consistency with documentation and detailing requirements.

Set Penetration Direction

Define the orientation of the penetration family so that instances align properly in relation to the intersected host element.

Define Parameter Names

Map parameter names such as Width, Height, and Thickness (Depth) from your penetration family. The tool sizes each instance dynamically based on the intersecting tray’s geometry.

Define Gap Size

Add a gap value to each penetration for installation tolerances, reducing field adjustments and ensuring smoother on-site fitting.

Merge Penetrations

When cable trays run parallel or stacked close together, enable merging to consolidate multiple penetrations into one larger, cleaner opening.

Set Merge Tolerance

Control the maximum distance for merging penetrations (e.g., 100 mm), minimizing clutter and avoiding unnecessary duplicates.

Use Cases

  • Site Preparation with Accurate Openings
Pre-cut openings based on precise Revit intersections, reducing last-minute core drilling, labor costs, and misalignment risks.

  • Seamless MEP–Architecture Model Integration
Detect cable tray intersections with host elements in linked models and automatically place standardized penetrations. This ensures compliance with project standards and improves clash detection and resolution.

With BIMLOGIQ Copilot, your Revit AI assistant, cable tray penetrations are placed automatically, precisely, and in full alignment with project standards. Watch the video below to see this feature in action.
